Built somewhere between 1630s and 1640s by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his most beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Emperor spared no cost to give his wife a monument of glory to be remembered for all time. The inside of this Moslem tomb is another sight to behold with its crystal stone of unique Indian design,
one cannot help wondering whether the building was really finished nearly 400 years ago or just 30 years old. The building is open to tourists from 6 AM to 7:30 PM every day except Fridays. A tourist who arrives early to the site of Taj Mahal will stand in awe as the rising sun casts a golden shadow on the building.
While Taj Mahal was built for love, Agra Fort was build for something more like war. Emperor Akbar, who shifted his seat of power from Delhi to Agra in the early 1570s, gave prominence to that piece of beautiful edifice that was build several years back. About 26 miles from Agra Fort is Fatehpur Sikri, one of the world heritage sites. The building served as the second seat of power for Emperor Akbar, but was most popularly known as his hall of private audience.
