Assam is referred to be a sacred place in the Indian epics. The state has many signs and symbols of its sanctity and piety in the form of the temples that stand since the ancient times. The temples that exist in Assam belong to different Gods and Goddess.
Assam is a nice place and as it is inhabited by the Hindus, it has many temples. These temples are decorated in a very nice way and people visit these temples not only to pray but also to see the culture and art of the people of Assam.
Hayagriva Temple
This temple is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists as the temple depicts the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Buddha by the outer carving of the story on the temples walls. The story engraved is an extract from the epic called Dasavataras. |
Negriting Shiva Temple
There is another Shiva temple in Assam besides this which is the Negriting Shiva Temple that belongs to the ancient rule of the Ahom rulers.
Umananda Temple
This temple is located at Bhasmachala, commonly known as the hills of ashes. These hills symbolize the story or the event when Lord Shiva burnt the God of love and desire, named Kaama.
Surya Pahar temple
Located in Goalpara nearby numerous archaeologist sites, this temple is very old. It is the place where Sun God is worshipped.
Ashvakranta Temple
This temple is a sacred place for people who are followers of Lord Krishna, He is supposed to have killed Narakasura, the demon, and this temple was established on the occasion of his appearance to earth as a savior.
Shakti Pithas
Assam is the place which is designated as one of the most sacred place for the followers of Durga. It is one of the Shakti pithas where vagina of the Sati fell after her corpse was devastated. There are other temples as well like the Kamakhya temple, Hatimura temple and Ugra Tara.
Kamakhya Devi temple
Last but the important of all, is the Kamakhya Devi temple where large number of people from all over India come to pay homage to the Goddess Shakti. In ancient times the temple was called Pragjyotishapura, which literally means astrology centre. There is another Ancient temple that exists in close proximity to this temple which is the Navagraha temple. These temples are precious jewels as well as the symbol of religious sanctity for the people of Guwahati. |
