Dances of Bihar like in other parts of India has an unbroken tradition. The two main divisions of dances in India are classical and folk.

Classical dance forms are based on ancient dance discipline and have rigid rules of presentation. A folk dance of India varies according to the region and has no specific grammar.

They fit in with the scheme of festivals in each region. Bihar was the first state to have its Academy soon after independence.

The Bihar Nritya Kala mandir, Patna is a training institute imparting training in the Kathakali style and also Bharatha Natyam. Dances of every place represent the culture of that place.

India is a country which is very rich in culture. As there are lots of activities going on in India which are really colorful, you find that every part of India has a rich traditional dancing style here. Bihar is no exception. People in Bihar dance in their own special way. Seraikella dance also known as Chhau dance is the most popular dance of Bihar.

Aggressive movements, dynamism, beautiful mask made from clay are the main characteristics of the Chhau dance. A very difficult dance which last for 7-10 minutes only. The vigorous steps of this folk dance make it appropriate for male dancers only. It conveys the message of ‘triumph of good over evil’. Virility and vitality is the essence of this folk dance. This dance from has gained popularity internationally as well as nationally.

Jumari dance- post-monsoon when the sky is clear with the moon spreading its radiant light. Women dance and celebrated the change of season.

Jat-jatin-is the folk dance of Mithila and Koshi region. This folk dance conveys the message of facing the hurdles of life with a smile. This dance performed by a man and a woman and it reflects the sweet-sour day to day quarrel that occurs between husband and wife.

Teej dance-Teej is the time when women fast and dance to various songs and welcome the monsoon season. Teej dance in Bihar is performed with colorful dandia sticks.

There are several other forms of dance in Bihar which will keep you spellbound such as, more morni, bidapad nach, dhobi nach, bamar nach, jhumar nach and launda nach. These dances portray the ethnic culture and rich tradition of Bihar. Thus the dances in Bihar are interesting. These are really special way of expressing emotions in general.
