There are not many wildlife sanctuaries in Chandigarh. Sukhna wildlife sanctuary is the probably the only sanctuary here. The primary concern of this sanctuary is conservation, protection and preservation. Prior permission has to be acquired to visit this place. Permission is granted on first come first basis.

Visitors are not allowed to stay at night in this premise during night. Every place has its own kind of wild life. The wild life of every place is dependent not only on the geography of the place, but also on the physiography and latitude of the place. Chandigarh, like the rest of India has very typical kind of wild life.

There are many different animals which are found in this region of the world. The wild life of Chandigarh is very rich. It is a very interesting kind of animal and plant life that you find in Chandigarh.

It is rich and traditional. It is interesting to note and it is under the effect of the climate and geography of the region. Chandigarh is rich in wild life.

Visitors are barred from carrying plastic bags and music system. Shooting and teasing animals is not allowed. This sanctuary is part of the Sukhna Lake.

A variety of herbs, shrubs, grasses, climbers and trees are found in this sanctuary. It is home to a variety of butterflies, reptiles, mammals, birds and micro-organisms. Sambar, Indian hare, rhesus monkey, squirrel, wild boar, Pangolin, mongoose, Indian civet etc. are found here.

Birds like peacock, woodpeckers, hawks, bulbul, black drongo, kingfisher, cuckoos, grey partridge, red jungle fowl, swan, ducks, bee-eater, koel, and myna are prominently seen here.

This wildlife sanctuary of Chandigarh also has snakes like the Russell’s viper, Indian python, rat snake, krait and cobra. Butterflies, honey-bees, moth and many other micro-organisms are abundantly found here.

5 kms from Chandigarh is the Chattbir zoo. It is a zoological park which houses many reptiles, birds and mammals. The lion safari is the main attraction of the Chattbir zoo. The Royal Bengal tiger is an asset to this zoo. Only the fortunate are able to catch a glimpse of it. Animals roam around freely here and visitors are allowed to make trips to the tiger reserves too. Extinct species of birds are also found here.

Though there are only two wildlife parks in Chandigarh it is worth visiting at least once. Its vast area, well-maintained flora and fauna attract people towards it.
