dances. Dances in Chhattisgarh are something which people use to
express themselves. There are many kinds of popular dances performed in
Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh has the maximum number of tribal communities, in fact the
oldest tribal communities live in this region. Each community has its
distinct dance form. This is visible during the festivals.
Saila Dance of Chhattisgarh is a stick-dance performed by the people of
Baitul, Chhindwara and Sarguja districts. Saila dance is performed in
numerous ways and are known by different names such as the Artari
Saila, the Chamka Saila and the Chakramar Saila. Each dance is
performed on a certain theme and feature.
Karma dance is a popular among the Gonds and Baigas tribes of
Chhattisgarh. This dance is connected to fertility cult and symbolizes
the arrival of spring season which brings in greenery all around.
Kaksar dance is a popular dance form of the Abhujmarias tribe of
Bastar. This dance is performed to invoke the deities’ blessings before
reaping a harvest. This dance is performed by young boys and girls.
Beg Phutni and Goncha dance is performed among the tribes of Bastar
district during sowing.
Raut nach, the folk dance of cowherds, Soowa dance and panthi karma
dance styles are very popular and noteworthy dances of this region.
Dance of Chhattisgarh is unique in its own way. The other prominent
forms of dance include Gendi dance, Dandari dance, Sela dance,
Bhagoriya dance and Damkach dance. Dhandiya the folk dance of Gujarat
seems to have evolved from the Dandari dance. Stilts are used in Gendi
dance. Poles or wooden sticks are used in Sela dance.
