Goa is a perfect place to enjoy sun and the sea. The beaches of Goa offer tremendous relaxation from the regular course of life. Apart from these beaches, there re also other things such as the temples and the cuisine that draws millions to this blessed land.

This land was under the Portuguese rule for a long time and the influence can be clearly seen now. This influence is visible in all forms of Goan life such as the architecture, the food of the region. The music and dance contains the tradition that is over thousands of years old.

Essence of Goa

While the music and dance is the very essence of rural Goan culture, the urban areas are adapted to modern music styles. Goa has a long list of cultural music and dances.

Goa itself is populated by artistic and highly talented people. It creatively combines the Eastern and the Western cultures. The Goan dances reflect the cultures, life styles and also the ambitions of the various different religions, castes and sects present in the Goan society. There are also certain dances that are carried out during festivals. Even the women take part in dances such as Deni, a unique mix of traditional and contemporary music.

An array of dances

Dhalo and Fugdi are the regular Goan folk dances. Kunbi is a folk dance of tribal people of Goa. This dance is performed by women by holding lamps on their heads during Shigmo festival. Another folk dance performed by the backward community is Morulem. This is typical traditional dance performed during the Shigmo festival. Zagor is also a folk play of Goans Gawda community presented in most of the Goan villages. Dhangar is a type of dance performed in Navratri as a spirited session of dance and worship. Another blend of Indian and western culture is displayed in love song Mando.

Prominent folk pleasure

Folk dramas are popular and some of them are Dashavatari, Kala, Goulankala, Ranmale and Rathkala. The folk dances in Goa display a tradition of few thousands of years and are performed by reflecting numerous cultures, lifestyles and objectives of various religions, castes and stratum of Goan society. The prominent dances also include Dekhni Dance, Dhangar Dance, Corredinho Dance, Dhalo Dance, Ghode Modni, Kunbi Dance, Fugdi Dance, Lamp Dance, Romal Dance and Mussal Dance.

Goff dance indicates the happiness of peasants after harvest. Kunbi dance belongs to the early Goan settlers. Mussal dance is performed to celebrate the accomplishments of Harihar, the Vijaynagar king of 14th century. The Lamp dance is done during Shigmo festival and the Romat dance is a thanks giving dance presented during Shigmo associated with huge Tashas and Dhols leaving the audiences spell-bound.
