There are six

sanctuary), Chorao Island (Salim Ali bird sanctuary), Cotigao, Madei,
Mollem national park and also at Netravali. The Bondla Wildlife
Sanctuary lies at the foothills of the Western Ghats and is an ideal
place to see some Sambhars and Wild Boars. The sanctuary covers an area
of over 8 square kilometers. It is at a distance of 55 kilometers from
Panaji and 38 kilometers from Margao. The sanctuary also has a fenced
deer park, Botanical Park and a zoo that was originally built to
shelter orphaned animals. But today it serves as a breeding colony for
deer species. It is also a popular picnic spot within the local region.
Another sanctuary
called Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary is on the Belgaum road toward
the north of Panaji covering an extensive area of 240 sq.kms. This
sanctuary is calm and opulent in wildlife amidst thick forest. It is an
ecstasy for bird watchers. Private arrangements such as jeep can be
made to visit the interiors of this forest. This sanctuary is known for
Elephants, Leopards, Deers and Indian Bison. This sanctuary has a great
facility of viewing wild animals conveniently from the Devil’s Canon
View Point. Bird enthusiasts can have their paramount time watching
various birds. There is a popular temple of Tambdisurla sited at a
distance of 13kms from here.
Salim Ali Bird
Sanctuary is along the river Mandovi, on the tip of island Chorao. This
sanctuary is aptly known for birds and is named following India’s best
known ornithologist. This sanctuary is open throughout the year and
visiting it entails permission from the forest department, Panaji.
Besides opulent varieties of coastal birds, you can also see jackals,
crocodiles and flying foxes. Another sanctuary encompassing 86 sq.kms
of deciduous woodland called the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is at a
distance of 10 km southeast of Chaudi. This was established to protect
the forest area bordering the Goa-Karnataka border.
