Celebration
of festivals
The state of
Himachal Pradesh enjoys its own diverse festivals. There are numerous
festivals celebrated in Himachal Pradesh. The festivals usually
symbolize the change of different seasons and there are sometimes
certain are certain tales that relate the importance of these
festivals. Whatever or however the origin may be, the festivals are
always colorful and enjoyable. One such lovely festival is the Pori
festival. This festival occurs in the Lahaul valley. The idol of
Trilokinath is bathed with milk and also yoghurt. The people beat drums
and blow conches. A horse upon which god is believed to be seated is
taken around the temple and is saturated in sweet after the ritual. The
king takes this horse for a ride to all the local shops.
Important
Festivals
One of the important
festivals is Dussera and is observed with great pomp in Himachal
Pradesh. Ramlila is followed throughout the state and the figurines of
Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbh Karna is set fire followed by crackers as
well as sweet distribution. The jubilations in Kulu are done with more
grandeur. This festival begins with the Rathyatra and has its
signification when Lord Rama triumphs over Ravana’s Lanka. This victory
is observed in August. The Holi festival is celebrated in the Phalgun
month on the full moon day. Women perform puja and special Kadah Prasad
is distributed. Tourist can have a gala time having Holi meals and
enjoy folk dances and folk forms that go on for minimal 5 days.
The Shivaratri
festival is celebrated with great sincerity and devotion and a fair is
conducted for 7-8 days between Februarys to March months. Though you
may notice sobriety, there is no dearth of joy. The folk songs, dance
and bonfires are held to mark festivals of crop initiation. Almost all
the months’ festivals are celebrated and it is a great experience for
tourists.
