Every part of
India has something different to offer to its visitors and southern
portion of India also has very rich culture and tradition. Kerala is a
state situated towards the southwestern coastal area of our country.
When we
discuss about the cuisines of Kerala (called ‘pachakam’ in Malayalam);
certain other things like the history, geography and culture
automatically enter into our discussion.
If we go
through the history of this region, we will see that primarily this
place belong to the Hindus who are vegetarian and on the other hand
large numbers of Muslim & Christians are also living here for a
long time those are non-vegetarian.
Thus Kerala
cuisines offer a mixture of both the non-vegetarian &
vegetarian dishes.

South Indian
cuisines normally don’t contain much spice but keralian cuisines are
very much spicy. Coconut trees can be found in galore in the beaches of
Kerala and this is one big reason behind the usage of coconut milk
& grated coconut in almost all the keralian dishes. Use of
coconut oil and coconut milk makes these dishes truly unique and
palatable.
Apart from this
Kerala is also famous for various sea-fishes that can be found in the
long coastline of this state. Fishing industry of Kerala is very strong
so you can also get many type of fish-based delicate dishes; more than
the Muslims, these sea-fishes are hugely popular among the Christian
community. Sea fishes are really tasty and even the tourists like to
eat these dishes.
Some
of the popular dishes of Kerala are:
The Tangy Rasam- hot rasam is served after some delicious sweets and
even the British liked this so much that they tried to copy it in their
‘Mulligatawny Soup’. Rasam actually is a mixture of chilies, pepper
corns powders that is boiled in tamarind juice. If it is properly made,
then it is really cherishable dish to eat.
Appam- it is like a
soft pancake that is made from fermented rice batter which has a very
soft spongy middle. Crispy edges of Appam are really tasty and it is
generally eaten with vegetable, mutton or chicken stew. Appam is
extremely popular among the keralians and even you will love it if you
experience the taste of it.
Puttu- it is a steam
cake, made from rice flour. It is steamed in a long hallow bamboo or in
a metal cylinder. Puttu can be eaten with bananas or with a spicy curry.
