south-western coast of our country, Kerala is a very advanced state
from every aspect of life having a very rich history, tradition and
culture.

dance & culture.
Kerala gave
birth to many type dances starting from; Folk-dance, Tribal-dance,
Classical-dance, Modern-dance etc.
Infact south
Indian music has its own flavor and an essence that is it’s very own
and unique. Keralian dance is a fine mixture of both the folk and the
purely classical dance form.

of the famous dance-form of Kerala are:

Chavittunatakom
Dance- this is one of the ancient dance form of Kerala.
This particular dance originally belongs to the Portuguese; when they
came here automatically their culture also got a place in the Keralian
culture. Chavittunatakom evolved in Keralian culture in 16th century
A.D. during the time of Portuguese colonization.
Kolkkali
Dance- it is a very popular dance form of Kerala. There
are innumerable arts and crafts in keralian tradition that includes
dance, music, martial/ritual arts. This particular dance is mainly
performed by the farmers and a classic example of folk-dance. The
dancers sing and everyone moves in a circle around a nilayilakku and
slightly stroke the sticks while performing the Kolkkali dance. The
pitch of the music rises as the dance progresses. In Malabar Coast,
Kolkkali dance is hugely popular among the Muslim men. This dance is
also liked by the tourists who come to witness Kerala.
Kathakali
Dance- Kathakali dance is a very popular dance form and
it is like a satirical dance-drama that is mainly based on the various
characters of the Hindu mythology. This is one of the most famous art
form of Kerala and this dance is learnt by dance-students belong to
other parts of the country. This dance consists of elaborate make up,
gorgeous dress and very colorful costumes. This a very tough dance to
learn and one needs high level of practice to perform this dance.
Mohiniyattam
Dance- this is one of the traditional dance form of
Kerala and it is indeed a very beautiful dance to watch. Mohiniyattam
can be taken as a very near dance form of Bharatnattyam. This is a very
popular dance all over the country.
Apart from these
dances there are many other dances in Kerala like; Oppana Dance,
Thullai Dance, Koothu Dance, Kutiyattam Dance etc.
