Lucknow's train station is a major junction on the railway route connecting New Delhi with Varanasi and connects with many other cities. Connections can be made to Agra and Allahabad from here, also. Lucknow is connected by road with all of India's major cities. The capital of the state Uttar Pradesh is just over 360 kilometers from Agra and 210 kilometers from Allahabad. Ayodhya is 135 kilometers away, Kolkata 985 kilometers, Varanasi 650 kilometers and Delhi just over 495 kilometers distant. The trip from Delhi takes roughly 10 hours by car and 12 hours by bus. Travel to Lucknow by road is also possible thus.
Bus stations are situated at Alambagh, Charbagh and Kaiar Bagh and buses on the route to and from Sunauli and Bhairawa, on the border with Nepal, stop here on their route to Varanasi but this is definitely not a form of travel to be recommended unless you are traveling on the shortest of shoestrings…. There is a far more comfortable, luxurious even, air-conditioned bus that connects Lucknow with New Delhi, via Bareily, Muradabad and Gaziabad.
Getting around Lucknow city in an auto-rickshaw is the same kind of fun as riding a roller-coaster but, if you prefer to be driven around by someone else in a less terrifying manner, you can always navigate the bustle in a taxi - do be sure to settle the price in advance... A Tonga or horse-drawn open carriage is a delightful way to get around although the seats in some of these contraptions can be a little slippery and the horses are not necessarily that friendly either! Still, it’s a good way to travel at least once, for the experience.
If you prefer to get around under your own steam, a walking, or rollerblading, tour of Lucknow will enable you to ensure that you don’t miss anything and can stop wherever, and whenever, you like. Just wandering around the ancient palaces of the Nawabs is sufficient activity to fill a fortnight’s holiday!
