India can be called as a land of temples. There are temples in every part of India. This is because Hinduism is the major religion in the nation; and so Madurai is bound to have many temples. Each of these temples has its own legend and there are a lot of tourists who visit each temple for every occasion.

The Madurai temples are numerous and they all have their own deities. The Madurai temples, India are a major part of the tourist attractions in the city. There are lots of people who are firm devotees of the temple deities. This is because the temples of Madurai are very old and they are considered to be very sacred by the people of the city.

The Meenakshi temple is the most celebrated temple in Madurai. People come from distant places and cities to visit this temple. This temple was built way back between the 12th and the 18th century by the rulers of the Nayak dynasty.


The presiding deity of this Madurai temple is Goddess Meenakshi. This temple is considered to be a southern gateway. The temple has two twin temples of Lord Shiva and also Goddess Meenakshi. This Madurai temple, India is an illustration of superb architecture and astounding engineering.

The Madurai temples origin is not yet identified, but the structures are between 12th to 18th centuries. The present temple was constructed in the 17th century A.D. by Nayak rulers. This temple is a superb example of magnificent architecture and sculpture. The Madurai temples, India focus mainly the Meenakshi temple as this temple stand towering the swarming streets.

The goddess Meenakshi is carved from a single emerald. Legend says that Goddess Meenakshi married Lord Shiva in Madurai and this is yet celebrated during every summer with great pomp, gaiety and enthusiasm.

Madurai Temples, India includes some of the ancient temples such as Koodal Azhagar temple, Thirupparankundram, Vanditur Mariamman Teppakulam, Azhagar Koil and Pazhamudhirsolai. The Koodal Azhagar temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu; the Mariamman Tepakulam is a huge tank equalizing six meenakshi temple.

This tank is empty for the whole year except for the Teppam festival. Thirupparankundram is an abode of Lord Sundareshwara and is a temple carved out of a mountain. Madurai Temples are prominent and are very culture oriented. Pazhamudhirsolai is an abode of Lord Subramanya. Visitors throng to visit these temples and are amazed to see such beautiful sculptures. All the temples are ancient temples and signify the importance of each temple.
