Dances of Maharashtra:
Introduction:
This state is considered to be a place of tradition and rich culture. This is a land of religious festivals and occasions.

There are various dances which are performed at the time of various special occasion or festivals. The state is rich in its cultural and tradition heritage. It has been popular for its music and folk dances which are true reflection to the society.

Maharashtra has a flourishing theatre tradition. As we all know that Maharashtra is rich heritage of culture and tradition. It contains different type of dance forms. There is some religious dance also which expresses the religious joy of lord Krishna.Tamasha is the folk dance which is popular all over the state.

Famous dances of Maharashtra:
Lavni: It is a mix of dance and traditional song which is particularly performed with the beats of ‘dholak’. The main feature of this dance is the performance by women in a special dress called saris. It has been originated from the word “Lavanya” meaning beauty.

Dhangari Gaja: It is one of the popular dances, which is performed by shepherds of the district people of Sholapur of Maharashtra. These people earn their livelihood by rearing goats and sheep. This dance is performed for taking blessings from god by simply pleasing him. The groups of dancers surround the drummer and they move in the rhythm. The dancers wear the typical Marathi dress.
Povadas: This dance describes the various events in chhatrapati shivaji’s life. He is considered as the greatest Maharashtrian leader ever. Though these dance they just try to remember shivaji, one of the greatest heroes during his time.

Koli: It is the most popular and famous dance of Maharashtra, as far as its name is concerned its name is derived from fisher folks. Their dance consist elements from fisherman occupation. These fishermen are famous for their dance and identity. The dance is performed by man as well as women. It is the most popular dance of this state.

Tamasha: It is considered among the important folk theatres in Maharashtra. Tamasha is derived from Persian word and its meaning is entertainment. This dance is a mix of numerous different influences. The instruments are Dholki drum, Manjeera, Tuntuni, the Kade and the gunghroos.
Kala: It’s a folk dance which describes the aptitude of The Lord Krishna. This dance is very popular in Maharashtra but the main attraction point for this dance is the perfect blend of rythem and beats.
