History:
Like most of the other countries Mahe also has a very interesting history. It was a part of pallava kingdom in the 4th century A.D. in the next few centuries it remained under the control of Pallavas.The 17th century started the era of colonial in India. After that it started to come under the rule of French.
The French acquired Mahe in 1720. The British do the settlement with the French and the Mahe remains the part of French till the 1954. During the 19th century the English took over it and named it with its present name Mahe.
Geography:
The union territory of India Pondicherry consists an area of only 480 sq km. pondicherry consists if villages and town that covers an area of 290 sq km. Mahe and its villages cover the area of 9 sq km. Mahe is the small island which is located in the north east of pondicherry. It lies between approximately 4 degree south and 10 degree south and 46 degree east and 54 degree east.
The Mahe consists of 155 small islands. Mahe possess with white sandy beaches at a distance of 200 or 300 years, are flats of coral that rarely achieve flats of more than 10 ft above sea level. The small streams slopping down from the slopes create the most fertile soils on the island.
This island is a small point in the geographical map. The people of Mahe got freedom on 16th July 1954 which shows that even when India got freedom in 1947 Mahe was still under the rule of the Foreigners. |
