No railway station is really close enough to be greatly helpful but the nearest are Chandigarh at 280 km away, Joginder Nagar at about 200 km and Ambala which is 355 kilometers away. Various buses, offering different degrees of comfort and convenience, travel into and out of Manali. Regular overnight buses, for example, depart Delhi at 18:30pm and arrive at Manali at 9:00 am the following morning.

To be sensible, one must say that, unless you are willing to spend a long time on actually travelling to Manali, let alone India if you are flying in from abroad, thus reducing the amount of time you have in which to enjoy actually being there, then the best way to reach it is to fly to Bhuntar and drive from there.
As always, a lot depends on the timescale and budget involved. If you are a student, trekking the Himalayas in your gap year, then you probably don’t really mind how long it takes to get from one place to another, provided it doesn’t cost too much. Conversely, if you are on a fixed fortnight’s vacation from your job, you may feel that you don’t mind how much it costs to get there, provided it doesn’t take too long! Manali travel is fun.
