Legend says that Imphal is the oldest living capital of India having
been founded in the 3rd century BC. One can fork out to various
destinations from Imphal.
The Sri Govindaji Temple next to the royal place is a centre of
Vaishnavism laced with historic footfalls. It is a simple edifying
structure. The presiding deity Govinda, is flanked by Balaram and
Krishna on one side and by Lord Jagannath on the other.
Nearby on the
Indo-Burma road is the historic palace of Langthabnand surrounded by
trees, houses and temples. Near the foothills is the quaint town of
Bishnupur that boasts of a 15th century Vishnu temple that has been
influenced by Chinese architecture.
One can make boat trips on majestic Lohtak Lake to visit two
picturesque islets.
Khwairambani Bazar or Ima Market is run entirely by about 3,000 women.
According to legend the goddess Ima looks after them.
Also near Imphal is Moirang town famous for its dance culture. It is
said that royal lovers staged their dance in this spot. Here there is
an old temple dedicated to the forest god Thankjing. One can also see
well preserved garments of 12th century Moirang kings.
After visiting the Kuki tribe in New Churachandpur one can go to the
Koina pilgrim centre on a hillock. The highest hill resort is Ukhrul.
The Konghampat Orchidarium boasts of over 300 types of orchids, while
the Manipur State Museum has tales to tell about the glorious past
through costumes, paintings, arms and other collections. For an
introduction to the wild life one should not skip a trip to the Manipur
zoo.
One has to pause to take in the vibrations of a travel experience in
Manipur.
