Introduction:
Music is an important accessory to any festival. Music has the themes of the wide range. The themes can include tradition, can have an art act of heroism, can narrate an important event of the past or even relate a story. This state is a land of culture and tradition.

This is a land of religious culture and festival. Various dances are performed on the occasion of festivals. The state is rich in its cultural heritage. This state consists of the dances and music which are true reflection of the society.

The most common musical instrument that is played by the people of the Nagaland is Petu. Petu is a type of a string instrument. The people of Chakhesangs and Angamis are fond of it. Another popular instrument in Nagaland is Theku. It is the wind instrument, the flute which is quite common.

It is quite famous among the youths. But now the present day youth, the guitar is becoming much more famous. As they are brought up and born in a Christian atmosphere, the young girls and boys naturally pay their attention to the western instruments and music.

Famous dances:
Zeliang dance: It is a folk dance which is performed by both men and women. In this dance there is nothing like individual performance. It is performed in circle. The dancers in this dance wear the colorful costumes. The zeliang dance is particularly artistic dance.

Naga dance: Dance is natural to naga tribes. The dance is full of vigor and vitality. Naga dance is generally performed in a group. This dance is performed in a circle. The artist firstly slowly entered on a stage and gradually works up tempo with the stamping of feet. The dancers wear the colorful costumes. This dance is very famous among the people of Nagaland.

Cock dance: It is a dance which resembles the trait of cock. This dance is particularly performed by men. The dancers wear colorful costumes. Drums and cymbals are beaten on regular intervals.

There are some songs also which are commonly and generally sung by the young as well as the old. They are classified as follows:

Heliamelu or dancing songs: These are the songs which are performed by both the young and the old and are highly romantic.

Hekialeu or a duet: This is also the song which is performed by both youth and old and this song is sung by the both boys and girls.

The dances of Nagaland show the cultural and traditional heritage of the state. Music is an important accessory of this state.
