Nagaland
Nagaland is one of the eastern states of India and shares the international boundary with Myanmar or Burma as it was known earlier. The neighboring states are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

It’s a small hilly state and has 16 major tribes and many sub tribes each having their own distinct identity, food and culture. Their lifestyles differ vastly from the rest of India and even their neighboring states.

Permits for entry
Domestic and foreign tourists require entry permits. Many areas are restricted areas and for this, restricted area permit are given to tourists for 10 days and then can be again extended for 10 more days.

It’s essential that tourists roam in groups of at least 4 people. Kohima is the capital of Nagaland. Dimapur is the only airport in the state and is connected to Guwahati and Kolkatta.

Dimapur also has a rail head on the North East frontier railway and there are many shuttle trains connecting form Guwahati. Though it’s not connected with any other city on the rail route.

Getting there
There are many taxi services and buses that run from Guwahati and Shillong to the various districts of Nagaland. The tourism industry in Nagaland is at its nascent stages and there’re few options for accommodations. Most of the towns and cities have a limited range of hotels for travelers. Rooms are available for $14 - $23 per day. The hotels are low to middle level budget for the tourists that come here.

Accommodation
There are many guest houses and government circuit houses throughout the towns and the villages that tourist can also use. Festivals are held by all tribes. These are held to commemorate the sowing and the harvesting of the crops. During this time, the women prepare the best wines and the best meats that are consumed with gusto by all the village folk.

Hornbill festival
There are many festivals held during the year. One such festival is the Hornbill festival. It happens yearly for seven days in the first week of December. The festival is held in a heritage village called Kisama. Here the local people, government and NGOs get a chance to showcase, revive and protect the rich Naga culture. It’s a festival that is marked by fun and festivities. People can the richness of the textiles, handicrafts and paintings that are exhibited here. Of course there is lot of music, merriment, food, dancing and drinking that happens here. There are many such festivals that are organized throughout the year.
