Orissa wildlife
The wildlife and the fauna in Orissa is rich and diverse. The state has many National park and sanctuaries. The wildlife in Orissa includes

Tigers
Tigers in Orissa are definitely under threat from deforestation and the poachers. Until recently in the 1950’s – 1970’s almost districts of Orissa had tigers. The Simlipal tiger reserve is included under the Project Tiger scheme. There is special emphasis on protecting the tigers and keeping the bio diversity intact.

Cormorants – Birds
Orissa is a migratory destination for many birds around the world. These birds are found in areas between Namibia and Alogoa Bay n South Africa. They migrate in October to November and then again in April. But the species has also taken to migratory routes and have been seen in the Czech Republic.

The Egret – Birds
The Egret is also a migratory bird and is very beautiful. They are snow white in color ad the females have a beautiful plume that is used to attract the males. They live in large colonies and the young are tended by both parents.

Crocodiles
Crocodiles in Orissa are cared for in Orissa but they are under the threat of extinction. There are more than 7 endangered species of the reptile, but further conservation efforts are required. The Crocodile Specialist Group is a world wide network of biologist, NGO’s farmers, Government officials, private companies and also tanners that are actively involved in the protecting and conservation of the species.

These are some of the Sanctuaries and National Park in Orissa that support rich bio diversity in the state.
Chilika (Nalaban ) wildlife sanctuary

It’s the largest brackish water wetland in the country and is the place where many of the migratory birds touch down for the wintering sites. There are more than 225 species of fish and many endangered animals that are found here.

Nandankanan Wildlife sanctuary
This is located only 13 kms outside Bhubhaneshwar and is along the banks of Kanjia Lake. It has an open Lion safari and has gharials which have been bred in captivity. There are Botanical gardens and tourist can also stay inside the sanctuary.

Bandhavgarh national park
This National Park is set in the Vindhayas and has its own ecological system and even climate. It has many wetlands and is home to many species of birds. The White Tigers are also found here and found in the old Indian state of Rewa. The other species that are found here are the Indian bison, Nilgai, sambar and the barking deer.
