When visiting North India, it is a must for you to visit Sarnath. There are six temples in Sarnath, which is one of the four holy Buddhist sites that Buddha himself has sanctioned for pilgrimage.

It is believed that holy men fell to earth here, which is based upon legend that the announcement of Buddha’s birth was made to 500 holy men by Devas who had come down from the sky. The holy men then ascended up into the sky where there relics fell after they each disappeared. It is no wonder that the Sarnath temples are so extraordinary.

Of those extraordinary Sarnath temples is the remaining foundation of the Dharmarajika Stupa, but it is still a very beautiful and historic site to see. Just imagine what sorts of activities took place there.

However, one of the most famous temples in Sarnath is the Dharmekh Stupa that stands at 128 feet high and is 93 feet in diameter. This is the place that is believed to have been the location in which Buddha preached his very first sermon. This is an excellent site to see because it is over 2,000 years old and has such historical significance.

Next is the Ashoka Pillar, which survived the Turkish Invasion. It wasn’t until after the invasion that this temple of Sarnath became damaged because the people of Sarnath were evacuating the area. There are also some fascinating carvings on this temple piece that sits in its original spot. You can observe these carvings and experience a part of Indian culture that you probably have not experienced.

Furthermore, the six national temples in Sarnath were built by a number of Asian communities since Sarnath was restored. Amongst these temples are a Sri Lankan temple and a Tibetan temple. You can also see the amazing Jane temple. This makes it obvious that Sarnath has to be on your tour stops in order to see the amazing Sarnath temples along with their amazing history.

So if you’re looking for a great North India adventure and you want to enjoy a bit of history too, checking out the temples in Sarnath will provide you with a very educational experience. The uniqueness of these Sarnath temples is second to none and deserves a look by you when you are vacationing in North India. You can see both the craftsmanship and the diversity, even if some of the temples have been resorted to ruins.
