The dances are
related to various themes that are as fascinating, natural and
enthralling as the dance itself. Certain Sikkimese dances are based on
the splendor of the environment around the place; the harvest season of
the region is also depicted by means of the dances.
Certain dances are
also performed to bring good luck and also prosperity. The instruments
used during the course of the dances are very unique to the people of
Sikkim. There is a long list of dances that are famous and are special
throughout Sikkim.
Types
of folk dances
There are various types of folk dances. Some of these dances are
performed only during marriage ceremonies, while few others are
performed during marriages, village fairs and childbirth. They get
dressed in vibrant colors and they perform it with full of vigor and
fun.
Some of the
prominent folk dances are Maruni, Tamang Selo, Dhaan Naach, Sebru
Naach, Dau Ra Jane, Sorathi, Z0-Mal-Lok, Chyabrung, Kar Gnok Lok, Chu
Faat, Dharma Jo, Mon Dryak Loks, Tendong Lho Faat, Mun Hait Lok, Tashi
Sabdo, Yak Cham, Singhi Chaam, Mun Hait Lok, Yak Chaam, Tashi Sabdo,
Singhi Chaam, Talachi, Lu Khangthamo, Gha To Kito, Be Yu Mista, Chi
Rimu, Rechungma, Gnungmala Gnunghey and Tashi Zaidha. All these folk
dances include dances of Tibet, Bhutia, Lepcha, Gurung and Nepali.
Some of the other
Sikkim dances are the mask dance called as Enchey Chaam, Rumtek Chaam,
Gouthor Chaam and Kagyed Dance. They follow the Buddhist mythology and
few other popular dances are Sherpa Sebru Naach, Bhutia Talachi, Bhutia
Lu-Khang-Thamo, Guning Sorathi, Bhutia Chi-Rimu, Bhutia Be-Vul-mista.
