You will typically have to take off your shoes before you enter a Srinagar temple. It is not rare to find a pile of sandals outside in the dirt from all that have entered. Sometimes, in Srinagar temples, gurus are located inside. Their job is to help you connect with the gods.
They are an equivalent to a Catholic priest, but for the Hindu religion. The gurus in North India temples may put a bindi, which is a red dot commonly worn on Indians, on your forehead or tie a bracelet around your wrist. Another thing a guru in a Srinagar temple might do is sprinkle water on your head which is supposed to bring you closer to the gods.
These types of experiences are not usual for most Westerners and for that reason, I recommend visiting Srinagar for a time you will never forget. It is important to remember to be very respectful in a Srinagar temple so as not to offend chanters and members of the Hindu religion.
Questions are welcomed, however, as North Indians like to make others really understand their religion and reasons for doing things. Even if you are not Hindu, a guru may put a bindi on your head and you will truly feel part of the culture regardless of your origin in the world.
If you would like your family to be well cultured and rounded when it comes to different religions of the world, do not hesitate to bring your children to a Srinagar temple. They will thank you later on for the amazing experience and the pictures that they will have to show their children when they are older.
