foreign civilizations. Tamilnadu is one such state in India. It has its
own culture. The music and dance of the region is an important part of
its culture.

dances that were originally started as a means of entertainment but are
now a part of the culture. There are also several dances that can be
considered as a part of the state’s culture.
Folk
Music and Dances
The folk music as well as the dances in Tamil Nadu represents the
aesthetic value and melody. They perform these dances during temple
festivals and community functions. Some of the folk dances are
Therukoothu, Kavadi, Thappattai, Karagam, Peacock dance, Horse dance,
Silambam and Oyilattam are some of the rural art forms, but are enjoyed
with interest and great enthusiasm.
The most celebrated
forms of dances are Bharathanatyam, Karagaattam, Kaavadi Aattam,
Kolaattam, Villu Paattu, Poikkal Kudirai Aattam, Puli Aattam, Snake
dance, and many more.
Bharathanatyam
requires perfect practice and is performed on great occasions.
Karagattam is performed by placing a pot on the head. This is performed
before Mari Amman. Poikkal Kudirai Aattam is danced using a dummy horse
made of light materials. This dance needs skill and training.
Bommalaattam is done during festivals or fairs. They enact from epics,
folklore and puranas.
Therukoothu is
conducted during festivals. Men take part in this and even the female
roles are performed by them. Their plays revolve around popular epics
such as Mahabharata and Ramayana. The Silambattam, Devaraatham, Villu,
Snake dance and Oyilattam are also traditional dances performed during
special occasions and sometimes for mere entertainment.
