The state of
Tamilnadu leads the other states in terms of festivals and also
celebrates its festivals with sheer jubilation as the natives uphold
their festivals with pride. During the times of the festivals, the
chief diet is adorned with yester century and also other clothing to
advocate the
beauty of the
festival. The temples festivals of Tamilnadu are during the months of
September and October and also from the months of March to June. The
deity is mounted on special carriers called Vahanams.
Festivals
Tamilnadu people celebrate festivals with great pomp and grandeur. Here
the festivals and temples go hand in hand. Festivals are observed as
religious occasions and also have cultural marks. During festivals you
can see a family re-union. Some of the important festivals of Tamilnadu
are Pongal, Kavadi, Karthigai Deepam, Vinayaga chaturthi, Navarathri,
Deepavali, Saraswathi pooja, Chithirai, Aruvathimoovar, Velankini
festival, and many more.
All these festivals
are done with sincerity and absolute devotion. They keep fasting until
each of these festivals are conducted and distribute the sweets
prepared and then have their food. Mostly all the delicacies are
prepared at home.
Significance
Pongal festival is a festival to thank the sun, cow and the earth.
Pongal is made with rice, milk and Jaggery in a mud pot. This is done
on the early dawn and is a sign of prosperity. The Kavadi festival is
for the Muruga devotees to carry flower decked ‘Kavadi’ to the Lord
Muruga at Palani Hills. Karthigai Deepam is celebrated by keeping
lights entirely in the house and goes on for nine days.
Vinayaka Chathurthi
is celebrated with gaiety and traditional fervor. This is one of the
popular deities in the state. Navarathiri lasts for nine days and is
devoted to Durga, Saraswati and Lakshmi by displaying hand made dolls
in the houses. Deepavali is celebrated with lights, sweets, new clothes
and crackers. Saraswati Pooja is dedicated to education, Chitirai lasts
for 10 days. All the festivals are an attraction as each festival is
celebrated in a unique style.
